"GRIND UNTIL YOU GET IT..."

It's been quite some time since I've posted and reached out to my followers. This year I intend to update you more regularly. Through this blog I plan on keeping in regular contact with those interested in what I do. I appreciate the support I have felt throughout the years and would love to start interacting with those listening. Quite a lot has been happening in the background and I intend to post regular updates on what I've been working on.

I was met with a number of personal challenges in 2017 but have been working rather diligently on new material. The songs I have been writing are exciting me in a way I haven't felt in a long time. This, in part, has been the result of me being very critical of what I like and very generous with what gets left on the cutting room floor. I have taken a new approach with how I refine and revisit my music and quite honestly couldn't be happier with the results. I want the new music to get people excited and make it worth the wait. I want what comes out next to represent an step forward in my creative development. It needs to be a serious step forward in creativity and writing.

There are now two tracks that have exited the writing phase, and a small handful ranging from 90% to 30% completion. The numbers on those creep up every week. The completion of new material has been my primary focus for some time now, which is why you haven't seen me on stage. My goal is to finish the writing process on these tracks in the not too distant future.

Thank you once again to those of you who periodically drop by to see if there is any news. I appreciate your interest and will have something new for you soon enough.

"Remarkable, isn't it, how quickly the venom of the Basilisk penetrates the body?"

A lot of you, I'm sure, have been wondering when the followup to 2010's "Piece by Piece" will be finished. The answer to that requires a bit of an explanation as to what I've been up to for the past 4 years.

After quitting my job and taking time to finish writing and record Piece by Piece, I returned to school to complete a Master's degree at Queen's University in my home town of Kingston, Ontario. During that time, a band I used to play in got back together and started gigging again. The only role they hadn't filled yet was that of the bass player.

Back around 2006 is when I first played bass with Basalisk. It was meant to be a temp position until they found someone permanent, but the band dissolved shortly thereafter. It wasn't until 2011 that long time friend, and Basalisk front-man,  James Wartman got the band up on its feet again. Their first show back on the scene was with Devin Townsend: I took notice hopped back in, re-adopting my roll as resident bass player a few gigs later.

Early in 2012 we entered Longshot Records and cut our first record, aptly titled "EP", with Matt Baetz as recording engineer. Over the past two years Basalisk has played upawards of 50 shows all over the province. Between studio time, regularly gigging and  two mini-tours, most of my musical energy (and most of my free time) has been dedicated to Basalisk.

I have to say that I have really been enjoying my time in the band. The recording of Piece by Piece really took my bass playing and writing to another level, so it has been nice to be able to use that skill in a new pantheon. The response I get at shows from other bass players (and some non-musicians) has been overwhelmingly positive.

With our second mini-tour just finished, we plan on spending the fall and winter of this year writing and recording a new album. I have to say that I am very excited to get back to working on new material with this band. In addition to Basalisk's album, I plan on dedicating the time to bringing my second album to life. I have been working on material (admittedly slowly) since Piece by Piece was released, and the coming months will be spent boiling it all down.

So, in 2015, keep an eye out for a new Basalisk record and possibly even a new Greg Shier release.

Covers, Covers, Covers.

For the foreseeable future I'll be driving up to do my recording with long-time friend Fred Lavoie at FML Studios near Ottawa, Ontario. After the recording of my cover of Led Zeppelin's "The Rain Song," we're continuing to work out sounds and mixes that we like in preparation to start recording the follow-up album to 2010's Piece by Piece.

The coming sessions will also serve as the first recording at FML Studio's new location. Over the next couple of months we plan on tackling a couple of covers from some of our favorite artists. Joining us on one of these recording sessions will be Rob Brezina

As the covers and associated videos are completed they will be available to check out on my YouTube channel.

In The Beginning

I've decided to start to grow my online presence. With so much in store for my music and band in the next year, I thought it best to start GregShier.com and grow it all into something that isn't restricted to the studio and the stage. I hope for GregShier.com to become the hub for my artistic endeavors where friends and fans can come for news, album updates, videos, show dates, and merch.

Here's to the future; here's to music.
